The Peninsula GP Network runs an extensive mental health program providing local GPs with access to a range of mental health counselling and support services for patients on low incomes and for patients with chronic mental health disorders. In addition, the Network provides ongoing mental health clinical education and professional development opportunities. The Network has developed strong partnership links with the Peninsula Mental Health Service, Peninsula headspace and a broad range of local mental health organisations and professionals, with the view to improving access and care for members of the local community.

Mental Health Reference Group

The Mental Health Reference Group meets bi-monthly and provides support, direction and input to the board range of activities of the Mental Health Program. The group is represented by GPs, allied mental health practitioners, a consumer and a carer. GPs are encouraged to become active members of the Reference Group. If you are interested, call the Mental Health Program Officer for more information.

ATAPS Referral Update- Peninsula GP Network will require ATAPS referrals to include a Mental Health Treatment Plan and a ATAPS Referral Form. The referral form will allow us to maintain more accurate records for reporting and ensure referrals are handled promptly. Referral for psychological services rebated under Medicare is available upon completion of GP Mental Health Treatment Plan. These forms are located on our resources page in both a PDF and Word Formats.

GP Mental Health Treatment Planning Item Numbers
These items promote a team approach to mental health treatment and care, with GPs encouraged to work collaboratively with psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and other allied mental health professionals (general psychologists, social workers, and occupational therapists with mental health training) to improve access and the availability of care options.

From the 1 November 2011, Medicare Items 2702 and 2710 for the preparation of a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan wll be removed from the Medicare benefits schedule (MBS) and replaced withnew time tiered items.

GP Psych Support Service
