The Peninsula GP Network (PGPN) is committed to supporting General Practice and their staff in improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. The key objective of the 'Close the Gap' program is to reduce the disparity in life expectancy between Indigenous Australians and Australians. In working toward achieving this objective the National Partnership Agreement has outlined five priority areas to be addressed:
• Tackling smokingThe Peninsula GP Network's role already incorporates a high level of community engagement however is now aimed at:
• Improving access to General Practice for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders
• Increasing the level of cultural awareness/sensitivity so as to best facilitate self-identification and ongoing total patient care
Closing the Gap Prime Minister's Report 2012: Closing the Gap is a framework for action on one of our nation's most important challenges. Work on reducing Indigenous disadvantage is a shared responsibility, requiring intense and collaborative effort from all governments, Indigenous people, the private sector, non-government organisations and the wider community.
